What it is

The Anti-Sperm Antibodies (ASA) test in serum detects autoantibodies that target sperm cells. These antibodies can interfere with sperm motility, function, and fertilization, leading to difficulties in achieving pregnancy. The test is often part of an infertility evaluation.

Uses

This test is used to investigate unexplained infertility in men and women. In men, it helps detect immune-related infertility caused by sperm antibodies. In women, it helps determine whether the immune system is producing antibodies against the partner’s sperm.

Symptoms That May Lead to the Test

Doctors may recommend this test if couples experience unexplained infertility, repeated IVF/ICSI failures, abnormal sperm motility, recurrent miscarriages, or a history of reproductive tract infections, surgery, or trauma.

Abnormal Results

Positive Anti-Sperm Antibodies: Indicates the presence of antibodies that may impair sperm movement or function, leading to reduced chances of fertilization and infertility.

Negative Anti-Sperm Antibodies: Suggests no immune reaction against sperm, and infertility may be due to other causes.

Risks

The Anti-Sperm Antibodies test is a simple blood test with minimal risks. Possible side effects include mild pain, bruising, or bleeding at the puncture site, and rarely dizziness or infection.
