Anti-Cyclic Citrullinated Peptide (Anti-CCP), Serum
What it is
The Anti-Cyclic Citrullinated Peptide (Anti-CCP) serum test detects antibodies that target citrullinated proteins. These autoantibodies are highly specific markers for rheumatoid arthritis (RA), an autoimmune disease that causes chronic joint inflammation. Anti-CCP antibodies may appear years before clinical symptoms, making this test important for early diagnosis.
Uses
This test is primarily used to help diagnose rheumatoid arthritis and to differentiate it from other forms of arthritis. It is also valuable for predicting disease severity and progression. Often performed alongside the rheumatoid factor (RF) test, Anti-CCP provides higher specificity for RA and helps guide early treatment decisions.
Symptoms That May Lead to the Test
Doctors may recommend the Anti-CCP test if you experience symptoms such as persistent joint pain, morning stiffness lasting more than 30 minutes, joint swelling, fatigue, or unexplained inflammation. It is especially useful in patients with suspected early RA when X-rays or other lab tests are inconclusive.
Abnormal Results
Positive Anti-CCP: Strongly suggests rheumatoid arthritis and may indicate a higher likelihood of severe or erosive joint disease. The presence of Anti-CCP antibodies is considered a prognostic marker for disease progression.
Negative Anti-CCP: Suggests lower likelihood of RA, though the disease cannot be completely ruled out. Some patients with RA may test negative for Anti-CCP but positive for rheumatoid factor or show clinical features consistent with RA.
Risks
The test requires a simple blood draw, which carries minimal risks such as slight bruising, mild pain, or temporary dizziness. No long-term risks are associated with this test.
