Bilirubin, Serum
What it is
The Bilirubin, Serum test measures the level of bilirubin in the blood. Bilirubin is a yellow pigment formed during the normal breakdown of red blood cells. The liver processes bilirubin so it can be eliminated from the body. High or low levels can indicate problems with the liver, bile ducts, or red blood cells.
Uses
This test helps diagnose and monitor liver diseases such as hepatitis, cirrhosis, and bile duct obstruction. It also helps evaluate conditions like hemolytic anemia and jaundice in newborns. Doctors often order it as part of a liver function test panel.
Symptoms That May Lead to the Test
Symptoms that may require a Bilirubin test include yellowing of the skin and eyes (jaundice), dark urine, pale stools, unexplained fatigue, abdominal pain, or suspected liver disease.
Abnormal Results
High Bilirubin: May indicate liver disease (hepatitis, cirrhosis), bile duct obstruction, gallstones, hemolytic anemia, or Gilbert’s syndrome.
Low Bilirubin: Usually not clinically significant but may be seen in certain medications or health conditions.
Risks
The Bilirubin test is a simple blood test with minimal risks. Possible side effects include mild pain, bruising, or bleeding at the puncture site, and rarely dizziness or infection.
