Body Fluids for Malignant Cells
What it is
The Body Fluids for Malignant Cells test, also called cytology of body fluids, is used to detect cancerous or abnormal cells in fluids collected from the body. These fluids may include pleural fluid (around the lungs), peritoneal or ascitic fluid (in the abdomen), pericardial fluid (around the heart), or rarely synovial fluid (from joints). The test helps identify whether fluid accumulation is due to cancer or non-cancerous conditions.
Uses
This test is commonly used to detect malignant effusions caused by cancers such as lung cancer, breast cancer, ovarian cancer, gastrointestinal cancers, or lymphomas. It also helps differentiate between benign and malignant causes of fluid buildup, and can be used to monitor cancer spread or recurrence in patients with a known history of malignancy.
Symptoms That May Lead to the Test
Doctors may order this test if you have unexplained fluid buildup in body cavities. Symptoms vary by site and may include persistent cough, chest pain, and breathlessness in pleural effusion; abdominal swelling and discomfort in ascites; or chest pain, palpitations, and difficulty breathing in pericardial effusion. It is also ordered when there is a known history of cancer with new fluid accumulation.
Abnormal Results
Malignant Cells Detected: Indicates cancer in the body fluid, which may be primary or metastatic. This helps in staging and prognosis of cancers. Additional tests such as immunohistochemistry or biopsy may be needed for confirmation.
No Malignant Cells: Suggests the fluid buildup is likely due to non-cancerous causes like infection, inflammation, liver disease, or kidney disease. False negatives may occur if the cancer cells are not shed into the fluid.
Risks
The risks are related to the fluid collection procedure, such as thoracentesis, paracentesis, or pericardiocentesis. These may include mild pain, bruising, or bleeding, rare infection at the puncture site, and very rarely organ injury. The cytology test itself has no direct risks.
