Brucella Antibodies – Total, Serum
What it is
The Brucella Antibodies Total test measures both IgM and IgG antibodies in the blood against Brucella species, the bacteria responsible for brucellosis. This zoonotic infection is transmitted through unpasteurized dairy products, direct contact with infected animals, or inhalation of infectious aerosols.
Uses
This test is commonly used to aid in the diagnosis of brucellosis, screen high-risk individuals such as farmers and veterinarians, support evaluation of patients with prolonged fever, and monitor treatment response in confirmed cases.
Symptoms That May Lead to the Test
Typical symptoms include prolonged fever, night sweats, fatigue, joint and muscle pain, headache, enlarged liver, spleen or lymph nodes, and relapsing fever. Patients with chronic undiagnosed illness in endemic areas are often advised to undergo this test.
Abnormal Results
Positive (Antibodies Detected): Indicates current or past infection with Brucella. High or rising antibody titers suggest active infection. Some cross-reactivity with other bacteria (e.g., Yersinia, Francisella) may occur.
Negative (No Antibodies): Suggests no evidence of infection. However, very early infections may produce false negatives before antibodies develop.
Risks
This is a simple blood test with minimal risks. Possible side effects include mild pain, bruising, or bleeding at the puncture site, and rarely dizziness or infection.
