C. Diphtheria, Culture & Sensitivity

What it is

The C. Diphtheria Culture and Sensitivity test detects the presence of Corynebacterium diphtheriae, the bacteria that cause diphtheria. A sample is collected from the throat, nose, or wound and cultured in the laboratory. If the bacteria grow, antibiotic sensitivity testing is performed to determine the most effective treatment.

Uses

This test helps confirm suspected diphtheria infections, identify carriers, and guide targeted antibiotic therapy. It is also used during outbreaks to prevent further transmission and ensure the effectiveness of treatment.

Symptoms That May Lead to the Test

Doctors may recommend this test if you show signs of diphtheria such as sore throat, thick gray coating in the throat, swollen neck (bull neck), fever, difficulty breathing, or skin ulcers in case of cutaneous diphtheria.

Abnormal Results

Positive Result: Confirms the presence of Corynebacterium diphtheriae and guides antibiotic selection based on sensitivity results.

Negative Result: No growth of diphtheria bacteria, suggesting symptoms may be due to another cause.

Risks

The test is safe and has minimal risks. Throat or nasal swab collection may cause mild discomfort, gagging, or slight irritation. For wound samples, minor pain may occur during swabbing.
