CA 72.4 Test
What it is
The CA 72.4 test measures the level of the tumor marker CA 72.4 (Cancer Antigen 72.4) in the blood. It is a glycoprotein often elevated in certain cancers, particularly gastric cancer and ovarian cancer. It may also be raised in other gastrointestinal and gynecological malignancies.
Uses
The CA 72.4 test is primarily used to help in the diagnosis, prognosis, and monitoring of cancer treatment. It can be used to track disease progression in patients with gastric or ovarian cancer, evaluate treatment effectiveness, and detect recurrence after therapy.
Symptoms That May Lead to the Test
This test may be recommended if you have symptoms suggestive of gastric or ovarian cancer, such as unexplained weight loss, persistent abdominal pain, bloating, nausea, vomiting, or loss of appetite. It may also be ordered for patients undergoing cancer treatment for ongoing monitoring.
Abnormal Results
High CA 72.4 levels: Often associated with gastric cancer, ovarian cancer, and sometimes pancreatic, colorectal, or breast cancer. Levels may also rise in non-cancerous conditions such as liver disease, pancreatitis, or benign ovarian cysts.
Normal or low CA 72.4 levels: Do not exclude cancer. Some patients with cancer may have normal CA 72.4 values, so the test is usually interpreted alongside imaging and biopsy results.
Risks
The CA 72.4 test is a routine blood test and carries minimal risks. Possible side effects include mild pain, bruising, or bleeding at the puncture site, and rarely dizziness or infection.
