Cholesterol HDL, Serum
What it is
The Cholesterol HDL, Serum test measures the level of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol in the blood. HDL is often called the “good cholesterol” because it helps remove excess cholesterol from the bloodstream and transport it to the liver for elimination. Higher HDL levels are generally associated with lower cardiovascular risk.
Uses
This test is used as part of a lipid profile to assess heart and vascular health. It helps determine a person’s risk for coronary artery disease, stroke, and other cardiovascular conditions. HDL measurement also helps monitor the effectiveness of lifestyle changes or treatments such as statins, exercise, or dietary adjustments aimed at improving cholesterol balance.
Symptoms That May Lead to the Test
Doctors may order this test if you have risk factors for heart disease such as obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, smoking, family history of cardiovascular disease, or abnormal lipid results. It is also performed during routine health check-ups and preventive screenings.
Abnormal Results
Low HDL Cholesterol: Associated with a higher risk of heart attack, stroke, and atherosclerosis. Causes include poor diet, sedentary lifestyle, smoking, obesity, diabetes, or genetic conditions.
High HDL Cholesterol: Usually considered protective against heart disease. However, extremely high levels may sometimes be linked to other health issues and should be interpreted in context with the full lipid profile.
Risks
The test involves a routine blood draw, which carries minimal risks such as mild pain, bruising, or dizziness at the puncture site. These effects are temporary and uncommon compared to the benefits of early cardiovascular risk detection.
