What it is

The Culture & Susceptibility, Semen test is a laboratory procedure used to detect and identify bacteria or other microorganisms present in a semen sample. Once an infection-causing organism is isolated, the test also checks its susceptibility (sensitivity) to different antibiotics, helping guide effective treatment.

Uses

This test is primarily used to diagnose infections of the male reproductive tract, such as prostatitis, epididymitis, or seminal vesiculitis. It also plays a role in evaluating male infertility, since infections can impair sperm quality, motility, and overall semen health. The susceptibility analysis helps determine the most effective antibiotics to clear the infection.

Symptoms That May Lead to the Test

Doctors may order this test if you experience symptoms such as painful ejaculation, pelvic or testicular pain, abnormal semen color or odor, burning sensation during urination, fever, or unexplained infertility. It may also be ordered after recurrent urinary tract infections or suspected sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

Abnormal Results

Positive Culture: Indicates the presence of bacterial or fungal infection in the semen. The susceptibility profile shows which antibiotics or antifungals are most effective for treatment.

Negative Culture: Suggests no infection is present. However, symptoms may still require further evaluation for non-infectious causes of infertility or inflammation.

Risks

The test is safe and non-invasive, requiring only a semen sample collection. The main challenges include proper sample collection and transport to the lab to avoid contamination or inaccurate results.
