Dengue IgG Antibodies, Serum

What it is

The Dengue IgG Antibodies, Serum test detects IgG antibodies produced by the immune system in response to dengue virus infection. IgG antibodies usually appear after the acute phase and remain in the blood for years, serving as a marker of past infection or secondary (repeat) dengue infection. This test helps determine prior exposure to dengue virus and immune status.

Uses

This test is used to assess past exposure to dengue, distinguish between primary and secondary infections, and support diagnosis when used alongside dengue IgM and NS1 antigen tests. It is particularly important in identifying secondary infections, which carry a higher risk of severe dengue complications such as hemorrhagic fever or dengue shock syndrome.

Symptoms That May Lead to the Test

Doctors may recommend this test if you have had dengue-like symptoms in the past or if you are currently experiencing fever, headache, muscle pain, rash, or bleeding tendencies and need confirmation of a recent versus past infection. It may also be used for epidemiological studies and in high-risk individuals during dengue outbreaks.

Abnormal Results

Positive Dengue IgG: Indicates prior exposure to dengue virus. If IgM is also positive, it suggests a recent secondary infection, which carries higher risk of severe disease.

Negative Dengue IgG: Suggests no past exposure to dengue virus. A negative result in the presence of acute symptoms may point to a primary infection, which should be confirmed with NS1 antigen or IgM testing.

Risks

The test requires a standard blood draw. Risks are minimal and limited to temporary discomfort, bruising, or mild dizziness at the puncture site.
