Dengue IgM, IgG Antibody, Rapid, Serum
What it is
The Dengue IgM, IgG Antibody, Rapid, Serum test is a quick diagnostic test that detects IgM and IgG antibodies against the dengue virus in a blood sample. It is a point-of-care test that uses immunochromatographic (rapid card) technology to provide results within minutes, making it highly useful for early screening in suspected dengue cases.
Uses
This test is used for rapid diagnosis of dengue infection, especially in outbreak settings or resource-limited areas. By detecting both IgM (recent infection) and IgG (past or secondary infection), it helps doctors differentiate between primary and secondary dengue infections, which is important for assessing the risk of severe complications.
Symptoms That May Lead to the Test
Doctors may recommend this test if you present with symptoms such as sudden high fever, severe headache, retro-orbital pain (pain behind the eyes), joint and muscle pain, nausea, vomiting, skin rash, or mild bleeding (nose or gum bleeds). It is especially important for patients from dengue-endemic regions or those with recent travel to affected areas.
Abnormal Results
Positive IgM: Indicates a recent or ongoing dengue infection, usually within the past few weeks.
Positive IgG: Suggests past exposure or a possible secondary infection. If both IgM and IgG are positive, it may indicate a recent secondary infection, which has a higher risk of severe dengue.
Negative Results: Suggest no detectable dengue antibodies. However, very early infection may still yield false negatives, requiring NS1 antigen or PCR testing.
Risks
The test requires a simple blood sample. Risks are minimal and limited to mild discomfort, bruising, or dizziness at the puncture site. These are temporary and uncommon.
