What it is

The Dengue NS1 Antigen, Rapid, Serum test is a quick immunochromatographic assay that detects the non-structural protein 1 (NS1) of the dengue virus in a blood sample. The NS1 protein is released into the bloodstream during the early phase of infection, usually within the first 1–7 days of fever, making this test one of the most reliable rapid screening tools for acute dengue infection.

Uses

This test is used for the rapid diagnosis of dengue fever in its early stages, helping differentiate dengue from other febrile illnesses like malaria, chikungunya, or influenza. It is particularly valuable in outbreak situations, emergency care, and resource-limited settings where fast results guide timely medical management.

Symptoms That May Lead to the Test

Doctors may recommend this test if you present with symptoms such as sudden high fever, severe headache, retro-orbital pain (pain behind the eyes), joint and muscle pain, nausea, vomiting, skin rash, or mild bleeding (such as nose or gum bleeds). The test is especially indicated in dengue-endemic regions or after travel to high-risk areas.

Abnormal Results

Positive NS1 Antigen: Confirms an early-phase dengue infection. Early detection helps doctors initiate monitoring to prevent complications such as severe dengue or dengue hemorrhagic fever.

Negative NS1 Antigen: Suggests no detectable dengue antigen. However, a negative result does not exclude dengue if testing occurs late in the illness. Additional tests (IgM/IgG antibodies or PCR) may be necessary for confirmation.

Risks

The test requires a routine blood sample. Risks are minimal, limited to mild pain, bruising, or dizziness at the puncture site. These side effects are temporary and uncommon.
