Ferritin, Serum
What it is
The Ferritin, Serum test measures the amount of ferritin in your blood. Ferritin is a protein that stores iron and releases it when your body needs it. Since ferritin reflects the amount of stored iron, this test is one of the most accurate indicators of the body’s total iron levels.
Uses
This test is used to evaluate iron stores and diagnose conditions related to iron imbalance. It helps identify:
- Iron deficiency anemia (low ferritin)
- Iron overload disorders such as hemochromatosis (high ferritin)
- Chronic diseases causing altered iron metabolism
- Monitoring iron therapy in patients with anemia
Symptoms That May Lead to the Test
Doctors may recommend this test if you experience symptoms such as chronic fatigue, weakness, dizziness, pale skin, headaches, hair loss, brittle nails, chest pain, or unexplained joint pain. It is also ordered in cases of suspected iron overload with symptoms like abdominal pain, liver enlargement, diabetes, or darkened skin.
Abnormal Results
Low Ferritin: Indicates depleted iron stores, commonly due to iron-deficiency anemia, blood loss (e.g., heavy periods, gastrointestinal bleeding), or poor dietary intake.
High Ferritin: May be seen in iron overload (hemochromatosis), repeated blood transfusions, liver disease, chronic inflammation, infections, or certain cancers.
Risks
The test requires a standard blood sample. Risks are minimal and may include mild pain, bruising, or dizziness at the puncture site. These side effects are temporary and uncommon.
