Fever Screen 1
What it is
The Fever Screen 1 test package is a focused set of diagnostic tests designed to quickly identify the most common infections that cause acute fever. It is usually recommended as a first-line evaluation for patients with unexplained fever, providing fast and affordable screening for tropical and seasonal illnesses.
Uses
This panel helps doctors detect key infections responsible for fever in endemic regions. Depending on the laboratory, Fever Screen 1 typically includes:
- Dengue NS1 Antigen / IgM: Detects dengue virus infection in the early and active phase.
- Malaria Antigen (Rapid Test or Smear): Identifies Plasmodium parasites causing malaria.
- Typhoid IgM (or Widal Test): Screens for Salmonella typhi infection.
- Complete Blood Count (CBC): Provides supportive data such as platelet counts, hemoglobin levels, and white blood cell counts.
Symptoms That May Lead to the Test
Doctors may recommend Fever Screen 1 if you have persistent or sudden-onset fever accompanied by chills, headache, joint or muscle pain, abdominal discomfort, nausea, vomiting, rash, or general weakness. It is especially useful where dengue, malaria, and typhoid are prevalent.
Abnormal Results
Positive Dengue, Malaria, or Typhoid Tests: Confirms infection and allows early treatment to begin.
Abnormal CBC: Low platelets may point toward dengue, anemia may suggest malaria, and raised WBC counts may indicate bacterial infection.
Negative Results: Suggest the need for more advanced panels or additional investigations to find the cause of fever.
Risks
The test requires a simple blood sample. Risks are minimal and limited to mild pain, bruising, or dizziness at the puncture site. These are temporary and uncommon.
