Fluid Routine Examination, Miscellaneous
What it is
The Fluid Routine Examination (Miscellaneous) is a laboratory analysis performed on body fluids other than the more common ones such as blood or urine. Depending on the clinical need, it may include analysis of pleural fluid (chest), peritoneal/ascitic fluid (abdomen), synovial fluid (joints), cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), or other collected specimens. This examination provides information about the chemical, physical, and microscopic properties of the fluid, helping to diagnose infections, inflammation, malignancy, or metabolic disorders.
Uses
This test is used to evaluate unexplained accumulation of body fluids and to aid in the diagnosis of:
- Infections such as bacterial, viral, or fungal diseases.
- Inflammatory conditions including autoimmune disorders.
- Cancers and malignant effusions.
- Kidney, liver, or heart diseases leading to fluid retention.
- Joint diseases such as gout, rheumatoid arthritis, or septic arthritis (if synovial fluid is tested).
Symptoms That May Lead to the Test
Doctors may recommend a fluid routine examination if you have unexplained fluid accumulation, swelling in the abdomen or chest, joint pain or swelling, neurological symptoms (if CSF is involved), persistent fever, unexplained weight loss, or suspicion of infection or cancer.
Abnormal Results
Abnormal Cell Counts: High white blood cell count suggests infection or inflammation, while malignant cells may indicate cancer.
Abnormal Appearance: Cloudy or bloody fluid may indicate infection, trauma, or malignancy.
Abnormal Chemical Values: Low glucose, high protein, or elevated LDH can point to infection or malignancy.
Risks
The risks depend on the site of fluid collection. Blood draws or needle aspiration may cause minor pain, bruising, or temporary soreness. More invasive fluid collection procedures (such as lumbar puncture, thoracentesis, or paracentesis) carry small risks of infection, bleeding, or discomfort, but are generally safe when performed by trained professionals.
