What it is

The Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH), Serum test measures the level of FSH, a hormone produced by the pituitary gland. FSH plays a key role in sexual development and reproductive health. In women, it stimulates the growth and maturation of ovarian follicles, while in men, it supports sperm production in the testes.

Uses

This test is commonly used to evaluate fertility, reproductive health, and hormonal balance. It helps in:

• Assessing causes of infertility in both men and women.
• Evaluating menstrual irregularities and menopausal status in women.
• Diagnosing ovarian failure, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), or pituitary gland disorders.
• Evaluating testicular dysfunction or low sperm count in men.
• Investigating delayed or precocious puberty in children and adolescents.

Symptoms That May Lead to the Test

Doctors may recommend an FSH test if you have irregular or absent periods, infertility, early or delayed puberty, reduced libido, low sperm count, hot flashes, unexplained weight changes, or other signs of hormonal imbalance.

Abnormal Results

High FSH Levels: May indicate primary ovarian insufficiency, menopause, Turner syndrome, testicular failure, or damage to reproductive organs.

Low FSH Levels: Suggest problems with the pituitary or hypothalamus (secondary hypogonadism), stress, malnutrition, or the effects of certain medications.

Risks

The test requires a routine blood draw. Risks are minimal and may include mild pain, bruising, or dizziness at the puncture site. These are temporary and uncommon.
