Glucose Random, Plasma
What it is
The Glucose Random, Plasma test measures blood sugar levels at any time of the day, regardless of when you last ate. Unlike fasting or postprandial glucose tests, this test does not require preparation. It is commonly used as a quick screening tool for diabetes mellitus and hyperglycemia, especially in emergency or outpatient settings.
Uses
This test is used to:
- Screen for diabetes mellitus when symptoms are present.
- Evaluate blood sugar levels in urgent care or emergency settings.
- Support diagnosis of hyperglycemia or hypoglycemia.
- Monitor blood sugar fluctuations in individuals with diabetes.
Symptoms That May Lead to the Test
A doctor may order this test if you present with classic symptoms of high blood sugar such as frequent urination, excessive thirst, unexplained weight loss, blurred vision, fatigue, or recurrent infections. It is also used in cases of sudden confusion, dizziness, or fainting to rule out abnormal glucose levels.
Abnormal Results
Normal Range: Usually less than 140 mg/dL, depending on recent food intake.
Prediabetes: Not routinely diagnosed by random glucose alone; further testing (fasting glucose, HbA1c, OGTT) is required.
Diabetes Mellitus: Random plasma glucose ≥200 mg/dL along with symptoms strongly suggests diabetes and often requires confirmatory testing.
Risks
The test requires a simple blood draw. Risks are minimal and may include slight pain, bruising, or dizziness at the puncture site. These side effects are temporary and generally resolve quickly.
