What it is

The H1N1 (Swine Flu) Real Time PCR test is a molecular diagnostic test that detects the genetic material (RNA) of the Influenza A (H1N1) virus using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technology. It is a highly sensitive and specific method that can confirm active infection with the H1N1 influenza strain within a few hours, even when viral levels are low.

Symptoms That May Lead to the Test

Your doctor may recommend this test if you present with symptoms such as sudden high fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, chills, fatigue, or in severe cases, shortness of breath and pneumonia. It is especially important for high-risk groups including pregnant women, young children, elderly individuals, and patients with chronic conditions or weakened immune systems.

Abnormal Results

Positive Result: Confirms the presence of H1N1 influenza virus RNA, indicating active infection. Patients usually require antiviral therapy (e.g., oseltamivir) and supportive care, with isolation to prevent transmission.

Negative Result: Suggests no detectable H1N1 virus at the time of testing. However, very early or late in infection, viral RNA may be low and not detected, so clinical correlation and repeat testing may sometimes be needed.

Risks

The test requires a respiratory sample, usually obtained via nasal or throat swab. Risks are minimal but may include mild discomfort, sneezing, gagging, or irritation during sample collection. There are no risks from the PCR testing process itself.
