HIV Detection 1 & 2 Tridot (Card Test)
What it is
The HIV 1 & 2 Tridot Test is a rapid, qualitative, immunoassay card test used for the detection of antibodies to Human Immunodeficiency Virus type 1 (HIV-1) and type 2 (HIV-2) in human serum or plasma. This test provides a quick and reliable screening result. It is commonly used in diagnostic labs, blood banks, and healthcare settings as a preliminary screening tool for HIV infection.
Uses
This test is used to:
- Screen individuals for HIV-1 and HIV-2 infection.
- Provide rapid results in clinical and emergency settings.
- Support blood donor screening for transfusion safety.
- Assist in antenatal screening for pregnant women to prevent mother-to-child transmission.
- Guide further confirmatory testing when results are positive.
Symptoms / Conditions That May Lead to the Test
Doctors may recommend this test if you have:
- History of unprotected sex or multiple sexual partners.
- Exposure to contaminated needles or blood products.
- Symptoms such as persistent fever, fatigue, weight loss, night sweats, or swollen lymph nodes.
- A partner diagnosed with HIV.
- Pregnancy (as part of routine check-ups).
Abnormal Results
- Reactive (Positive) Result: Indicates the presence of antibodies to HIV-1 or HIV-2, suggesting HIV infection. Confirmatory testing (e.g., Western Blot, ELISA, or PCR) is mandatory to rule out false positives.
- Non-Reactive (Negative) Result: Suggests no detectable HIV antibodies. However, if exposure was recent (within the “window period” of 2–12 weeks), the virus may not yet be detectable, and repeat testing is advised.
This test is a screening tool and not a confirmatory test; results must be interpreted along with clinical findings and additional laboratory confirmation.
Risks
The test requires a blood sample and carries minimal risks, including:
- Mild pain, bruising, or discomfort at the puncture site.
- Rare risk of infection or dizziness after blood draw.
