Iron Profile
What it is
The Iron Profile is a group of blood tests that assess iron levels and how the body stores and transports iron. It usually includes serum iron, total iron-binding capacity (TIBC), unsaturated iron-binding capacity (UIBC), and transferrin saturation. These combined results provide a comprehensive picture of iron status, helping detect both iron deficiency and iron overload conditions.
Uses
This test is used to evaluate suspected anemia, monitor treatment for iron deficiency, assess unexplained fatigue or weakness, and investigate chronic conditions that affect iron balance. It may also be ordered to help diagnose hereditary hemochromatosis or monitor patients receiving repeated blood transfusions.
Symptoms That May Lead to the Test
Doctors may recommend this test if you experience fatigue, pale skin, brittle nails, hair loss, dizziness, shortness of breath, rapid heartbeat, unusual cravings (pica), or darkening of the skin. It is also helpful in individuals with chronic bleeding, poor diet, or liver disorders.
Abnormal Results
Iron Deficiency: May show low serum iron, high TIBC/UIBC, and low transferrin saturation. This suggests depleted iron stores and a risk of iron-deficiency anemia.
Iron Overload: May show high serum iron, low TIBC/UIBC, and high transferrin saturation, which can occur in hereditary hemochromatosis, liver disease, or after multiple transfusions.
Risks
The test requires a standard blood draw, with minimal risks such as mild pain, bruising, or dizziness at the puncture site. Serious complications are very rare.
