Levetiracetam
What it is
The Levetiracetam test measures the level of levetiracetam, an antiepileptic drug, in the blood. Levetiracetam is commonly prescribed to control seizures in conditions such as epilepsy. Monitoring its levels helps ensure the drug concentration stays within the therapeutic range for effective seizure control while minimizing side effects.
Uses
This test is used to monitor patients taking levetiracetam for seizure management, assess treatment compliance, and adjust dosage in cases of under- or over-medication. It is also helpful in evaluating suspected drug toxicity, drug interactions, or unusual pharmacokinetics in patients with kidney impairment, since levetiracetam is largely excreted by the kidneys.
Symptoms That May Lead to the Test
Doctors may recommend levetiracetam level monitoring if you continue to have seizures despite treatment, experience side effects such as dizziness, fatigue, mood changes, or confusion, or if you have kidney disease requiring dose adjustment. It may also be ordered during pregnancy or in children, where drug metabolism can vary.
Abnormal Results
High Levetiracetam Levels: May indicate overdose or reduced drug clearance, leading to side effects such as drowsiness, irritability, mood swings, or coordination problems.
Low Levetiracetam Levels: Suggest subtherapeutic dosing, poor absorption, non-compliance, or drug interactions, which may result in breakthrough seizures.
Results must always be interpreted alongside clinical response rather than drug levels alone.
Risks
The test requires a routine blood sample, with minimal risks such as slight pain, bruising, or dizziness at the puncture site. Serious complications are very rare.
