Liver Profile Mini
What it is
The Liver Profile Mini is a basic screening panel designed to assess essential markers of liver health and function. It typically includes tests such as bilirubin (total and direct), SGPT (ALT), SGOT (AST), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and sometimes total protein and albumin. These parameters help evaluate how well the liver is processing waste, producing proteins, and supporting digestion and metabolism.
Uses
This test is used to screen for liver disease, monitor liver function in patients taking medications that affect the liver, and detect early signs of liver damage. It is also ordered as part of routine health check-ups or before surgeries to ensure proper liver function.
Symptoms That May Lead to the Test
Doctors may recommend the Liver Profile Mini if you have symptoms such as persistent fatigue, abdominal pain, yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice), dark urine, pale stools, nausea, vomiting, or unexplained weight loss. It is especially useful for individuals with risk factors such as alcohol use, hepatitis, obesity, or a family history of liver disease.
Abnormal Results
High ALT/AST: May indicate hepatitis, fatty liver disease, or alcohol-related injury.
High Bilirubin: Suggests jaundice, bile duct obstruction, or impaired liver cell function.
Abnormal ALP: May reflect bile duct obstruction, liver disease, or bone-related conditions.
Low Albumin/Protein: Could point to chronic liver disease, malnutrition, or reduced protein synthesis capacity.
Risks
The test requires a simple blood draw, with minimal risks such as mild pain, bruising, or dizziness at the puncture site. Serious complications are extremely rare.
