Magnesium, Serum
What it is
The Magnesium, Serum test measures the level of magnesium in the blood. Magnesium is an essential mineral that plays a critical role in muscle and nerve function, maintaining a steady heart rhythm, supporting the immune system, strengthening bones, and regulating blood glucose and blood pressure. Since only a small portion of total body magnesium is present in blood, this test provides a useful snapshot of magnesium status.
Uses
This test is used to evaluate magnesium levels in patients with suspected deficiency or excess, to monitor individuals on diuretics or magnesium supplements, and to assess electrolyte disturbances. It also helps in diagnosing conditions affecting magnesium balance, including kidney disease, gastrointestinal disorders, uncontrolled diabetes, and certain endocrine disorders.
Symptoms That May Lead to the Test
Doctors may order this test if you experience symptoms such as muscle weakness, cramps, tremors, irregular heartbeat, seizures, confusion, fatigue, or tingling sensations. It may also be recommended if you have chronic diarrhea, malabsorption syndromes, alcoholism, or are undergoing treatment that affects electrolyte balance.
Abnormal Results
Low Serum Magnesium (Hypomagnesemia): May result from poor dietary intake, gastrointestinal loss (vomiting, diarrhea, malabsorption), chronic alcoholism, diuretic use, or uncontrolled diabetes.
High Serum Magnesium (Hypermagnesemia): May occur in kidney failure, overuse of magnesium-containing supplements or laxatives, dehydration, or Addison’s disease. High levels can cause nausea, muscle weakness, slowed heart rate, and in severe cases, cardiac arrest.
Risks
The test requires a simple blood draw. Risks are minimal and limited to temporary pain, bruising, or dizziness at the puncture site, which usually resolve quickly.
