Opportunistic Infection Panel
What it is
The Opportunistic Infection Panel is a group of diagnostic tests designed to detect infections that take advantage of weakened immune systems. Opportunistic infections commonly affect individuals with HIV/AIDS, cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, transplant recipients on immunosuppressants, or those with chronic illnesses that compromise immunity. This panel typically screens for bacterial, viral, fungal, and parasitic pathogens associated with severe infections in immunocompromised patients.
Uses
This panel is used to identify and monitor infections in patients with suppressed immunity, enabling timely treatment. It helps detect conditions such as tuberculosis, cytomegalovirus (CMV), toxoplasmosis, pneumocystis pneumonia (PCP), fungal infections like candidiasis, and viral infections including hepatitis and herpesvirus. By identifying specific pathogens, it guides doctors in prescribing targeted therapies and preventing complications.
Symptoms That May Lead to the Test
Doctors may recommend the Opportunistic Infection Panel if you have unexplained fever, persistent cough, chronic diarrhea, mouth or throat ulcers, skin rashes, swollen lymph nodes, weight loss, or neurological symptoms such as headaches or confusion. It is often ordered in patients known to have HIV/AIDS or other causes of immunodeficiency.
Abnormal Results
Positive Results: Indicate the presence of one or more opportunistic infections, which may require immediate antimicrobial or antiviral therapy depending on the organism detected.
Negative Results: Suggest that no detectable opportunistic infections are present at the time of testing, though regular monitoring may still be necessary in immunocompromised patients.
Risks
The panel usually requires blood samples, though urine, stool, or swabs may also be collected depending on the suspected infection. Risks are minimal and limited to mild pain, bruising, or dizziness at the blood draw site. Proper sample handling is essential for accurate results.
