Testosterone Total (2nd Generation), Serum
What it is
The Testosterone Total (2nd Generation), Serum test measures the total concentration of testosterone in the blood using an advanced, highly accurate method. Testosterone is the primary male sex hormone, also present in women in smaller amounts, responsible for sexual development, muscle mass, bone strength, and overall reproductive health. The 2nd generation assay provides improved sensitivity and specificity, particularly useful for measuring low testosterone levels.
Uses
This test is used to evaluate disorders related to testosterone imbalance in both men and women. In men, it helps diagnose hypogonadism, infertility, erectile dysfunction, and delayed or precocious puberty. In women, it is used to investigate irregular menstrual cycles, infertility, and conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). It is also used for monitoring testosterone replacement therapy.
Symptoms That May Lead to the Test
Doctors may recommend this test if you experience symptoms of hormone imbalance such as decreased libido, fatigue, infertility, erectile dysfunction, reduced muscle mass, increased body fat, or osteoporosis in men. In women, signs include excessive hair growth, acne, irregular periods, infertility, or deepening of the voice.
Abnormal Results
Low Testosterone Levels: May indicate hypogonadism, pituitary or hypothalamic dysfunction, chronic illness, or side effects of medications. In men, this can cause infertility, low libido, and osteoporosis. In women, very low levels are less common but may impact bone health and libido.
High Testosterone Levels: In men, may result from anabolic steroid use or androgen-secreting tumors. In women, high levels are often associated with PCOS, adrenal or ovarian tumors, or congenital adrenal hyperplasia.
Risks
The test requires a simple blood sample, usually taken in the morning when testosterone levels peak. Risks are minimal and may include mild pain, bruising, or dizziness at the puncture site. These are temporary and rarely serious.
