What it is

Uses

This test is primarily used to evaluate allergic diseases such as asthma, hay fever, eczema, and food allergies. It also helps in monitoring parasitic infections and some rare immune disorders. In some cases, it is used alongside specific IgE testing to identify exact allergens.

Symptoms That May Lead to the Test

Doctors may order this test if you have frequent sneezing, runny nose, itching, skin rashes, wheezing, shortness of breath, or chronic cough. It is also advised for patients with unexplained allergic reactions or suspected parasitic infections.

Abnormal Results

High IgE Levels: May indicate allergic conditions, asthma, atopic dermatitis (eczema), parasitic infections, or rarely immune disorders and certain cancers such as IgE myeloma.

Low or Normal IgE Levels: Suggests no significant allergic response, though allergies cannot be completely ruled out as some people may have normal IgE despite symptoms.

Risks

The Total IgE test is a simple blood test with minimal risks. Possible side effects include mild pain, bruising, or bleeding at the puncture site, and rarely dizziness or infection.
