Urea, 24 Hrs Urine
What it is
The Urea 24 Hours Urine test measures the amount of urea excreted in the urine collected over a full day. Urea is a waste product formed in the liver during protein metabolism and eliminated by the kidneys. This test helps evaluate kidney function, protein metabolism, and nutritional status.
Uses
This test is used to assess kidney function, detect abnormal protein breakdown, monitor patients with kidney disease or liver disorders, and evaluate the effectiveness of dialysis. It is also useful in checking overall protein intake and metabolism.
Symptoms That May Lead to the Test
Doctors may order this test if you have symptoms such as frequent urination, swelling in legs or ankles, unexplained fatigue, nausea, vomiting, or if you are undergoing evaluation for kidney or liver disease.
Abnormal Results
High Urea in Urine: May indicate excessive protein intake, uncontrolled diabetes, hyperthyroidism, fever, or recovery from kidney failure.
Low Urea in Urine: Can be seen in kidney failure, severe liver disease, malnutrition, low protein intake, or urinary tract obstruction.
Risks
There are no direct risks to the test as it involves only urine collection. The main challenge is the inconvenience of collecting all urine over a 24-hour period.
