Uric Acid, Random Urine
What it is
The Uric Acid, Random Urine test measures the amount of uric acid present in a single, randomly collected urine sample. Uric acid is a waste product formed from the breakdown of purines, substances found in certain foods and produced naturally in the body. Abnormal levels in urine may indicate problems with kidney function, metabolism, or gout risk.
Uses
This test is used to evaluate kidney function, detect gout and other uric acid-related disorders, monitor uric acid excretion in patients with kidney stones, and assess metabolic conditions that may affect uric acid levels.
Symptoms That May Lead to the Test
Doctors may recommend this test if you have symptoms such as joint pain or swelling (suggestive of gout), recurrent kidney stones, unexplained abdominal or flank pain, or signs of kidney dysfunction. It may also be ordered in patients on uric acid-lowering treatment.
Abnormal Results
High Uric Acid in Urine: May suggest gout, high purine diet, certain cancers, kidney stones, or metabolic disorders.
Low Uric Acid in Urine: May indicate kidney disease, lead poisoning, alcohol-related issues, or reduced uric acid production.
Risks
The test carries no major risks since it involves urine collection only. The main inconvenience may be in collecting a clean urine sample, but no physical side effects are associated.
