Valproic Acid, Serum
What it is
The Valproic Acid, Serum test measures the concentration of valproic acid in the blood. Valproic acid is an anticonvulsant medication used to treat epilepsy, bipolar disorder, and to prevent migraine headaches. Monitoring its serum level is important because the drug has a narrow therapeutic range—too little may not control symptoms, while too much can cause toxicity.
Uses
This test is used to ensure that the valproic acid level is within the therapeutic range, to monitor treatment effectiveness, and to adjust dosage safely. It also helps detect noncompliance, drug interactions, or toxicity in patients receiving valproic acid therapy.
Symptoms That May Lead to the Test
Doctors may recommend this test if you are on valproic acid treatment and show signs of poor seizure control, mood instability, or suspected side effects. Symptoms of toxicity that may lead to testing include confusion, drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, tremors, or abnormal liver function results.
Abnormal Results
High Valproic Acid Levels: May indicate overdose or toxicity, which can cause liver damage, pancreatitis, confusion, coma, or other serious complications.
Low Valproic Acid Levels: May suggest insufficient dosage, missed doses, or drug interactions that reduce absorption, leading to ineffective seizure or mood control.
Therapeutic Range: The typical therapeutic range is 50–100 µg/mL (may vary slightly by lab and clinical situation).
Risks
The test involves a simple blood draw, with minimal risks such as slight bruising, mild pain, or temporary dizziness. There are no long-term risks associated with the procedure.
