What it is

The Valproic Acid, Serum test measures the concentration of valproic acid in the blood. Valproic acid is an anticonvulsant medication used to treat epilepsy, bipolar disorder, and to prevent migraine headaches. Symptoms That May Lead to the Test

Abnormal Results

High Valproic Acid Levels: May indicate overdose or toxicity, which can cause liver damage, pancreatitis, confusion, coma, or other serious complications.

Low Valproic Acid Levels: May suggest insufficient dosage, missed doses, or drug interactions that reduce absorption, leading to ineffective seizure or mood control.

Therapeutic Range: The typical therapeutic range is 50–100 µg/mL (may vary slightly by lab and clinical situation).

Risks
