Vitamin K1, Serum
What it is
The Vitamin K1, Serum test measures the level of Vitamin K1 (phylloquinone) in the blood. Vitamin K1 is a fat-soluble vitamin that plays a crucial role in blood clotting, bone metabolism, and cardiovascular health. Since Vitamin K cannot be stored in large amounts, deficiencies can occur with poor dietary intake or absorption issues.
Uses
This test is used to diagnose Vitamin K deficiency, evaluate unexplained bleeding or bruising, monitor patients on anticoagulant therapy (e.g., warfarin), and assess nutritional status in individuals with malabsorption disorders or liver disease.
Symptoms That May Lead to the Test
Doctors may recommend this test if you have easy bruising, frequent nosebleeds, bleeding gums, prolonged bleeding from cuts, blood in stool or urine, or excessive menstrual bleeding. It may also be ordered for newborns, who are at higher risk of Vitamin K deficiency bleeding.
Abnormal Results
Low Vitamin K1: Indicates deficiency, which may result from poor dietary intake, chronic liver disease, malabsorption syndromes (celiac disease, Crohn’s disease), prolonged antibiotic use, or anticoagulant overdose.
High Vitamin K1: Rare, but may occur with excessive supplementation. Toxicity is uncommon but could potentially interfere with anticoagulant therapy.
Risks
The test is a standard blood test with minimal risks. Possible side effects include mild pain, bruising, or bleeding at the puncture site, and rarely dizziness or infection.
